M-ASA Aircraft

Aircraft available at M-ASA are shown in the following table:

QuantityAircraftManufacturerSeats Notes
3SGS 2-33Schweizer2 Two seat trainer, steel tube and fabric fuselage, metal wings [photo]. Used for One is usually at Fairfield and two at Frederick. The 2-33's are used for ab-initio training, bi-annual flight reviews, field check-outs, and most intermediate training and refresher instruction.
2-33's are robust, stable, predictable, and easy to fly. New students receive their training on 2-33's and they are the first planes that students fly solo.
1G-103Grob2 Advanced, medium-high performance fiberglass trainer and cross country sailplane, with fixed landing gear [photo]. Used for advanced training and pleasure flying. The 103 is a later development of the Twin Astir.
1Twin AstirGrob2 An earlier version of the 103, a bit heavier, with retractable landing gear and somewhat different flight characteristics. Used for advanced training and pleasure flying. When the 103 is at Fairfield, the Astir is usually at Frederick, and vice versa.
1Ka-7Schleicher2 Medium performance, wood and fabric, two seat sailplane [photo]. It is used mostly for pleasure flying but also for training in a plane with different flight characteristics than the 2-33's.
1Ka-8Schleicher1 Light weight, wood and fabric sailplane, representative of classic soaring in the 1950's and 60's.
1B-4Pilatus1 All metal, high-performance plane with retractable landing gear.
1SGS 1-36Schweizer1 All metal, medium performance club style plane, rugged and easy to fly. [photo]. Here's a photo of a similar privately owned ship.
2PawneePiper1 Powerful, single-seat powered aircraft originally designed as crop-dusters [photo]. Pawnees are built to carry heavy loads at low speeds and maneuver close to the ground. They make excellent tow-planes and are frequently used by U.S. soaring operations as tugs. One is kept at Frederick and one at Fairfield.
1Super CubPiper2 Classic American light utility aircraft. The Super Cub is used for towing and tow pilot training and checkout.

Facilities at the Mid-Atlantic Soaring Center (Fairfield)

M-ASA has a large open hangar for the storage of club owned and privately owned gliders available at M-ASC. In addition M-ASA has a tow plane hangar to store the tow planes, and three large trailer hangars available for the storage of gliders stored in their trailers. A total of 52 trailers can be stored in these hangars. The large open hangar can store member owned assembled gliders. The cost of the storage facilities varies. The trailer hangar slots rent for $35/month (payable in two installments of $210 each). Assembled gliders can be stored in the main hangar for $660/year (also payable in two installments each year of $330 each). M-ASA members may tie down gliders in designated locations with approval from the Board of Directors for a fee of $10/month (payable in one installment each year of $120).

The M-ASC clubroom has bathrooms, showers, a kitchen, and a meeting room. The bathrooms and showers are available to members who wish to camp out at the gliderport (showers are shut down at the end of the operating season for the winter). There is space on the gliderport for member owned camping trailers (for an annual fee), and members may pitch tents and campout on the gliderport grounds and occasionally sleep in the clubroom overnight, using sleeping bags on the clubroom floor.

M-ASA Facilities at The Frederick Municipal Airport

M-ASA has a large hangar on the northwest side of the Frederick Municipal airport. This hangar has space for assembled gliders and tow planes. There are nineteen spaces for assembled aircraft, and two spaces for tow planes. The spaces in the hangar are available on a first come first served basis by way of a waiting list. To get on the waiting list members must either have a glider, or have one on order, or be in the process of building or restoring one. The rate for hangar space at Frederick is $60, payable in two installments of $360. There is space behind the hangar for the storage of glider trailers. The space for trailers is limited, and members must ask the Board of Directors for permission to keep a trailer at the field. Trailers kept at Frederick must be secured properly on a hitching post.  M-ASA members may tie down gliders in designated locations with approval from the Board of Directors for a fee of $10/month (payable in one installment each year of $120).
